077 - A4 Framed Print - Ferret Scout Car Mk 1/1 (A3 mounted Option also available)
Ferret Scout Car Mk 1/1
After the success of the British Daimler 'Dingo' Scout Car during and after WW2, Daimler 'Set to' in designing a replacement for the Dingo. A difficult task to be sure but, they succeeded! Off the drawing board came the 'Ferret' Scout Car Mk1 shortly followed by the 1/1 with thicker armour being the main difference. Other variants would follow, the most common being the Mk2 fitted with a turret.
The Ferret was a gem of a vehicle being used in a huge variet of roles and becoming famed for that versatility along with mechanical reliability from its six cylinder B60 Rolls Royce petrol engine. Sold world wide I'm sure somewhere you will still find a Ferret in service! Even we in the UK were still using Ferrets during the Gulf Wars and now withdrawn from service, the UK has still not found a 'like for like' replacement for such a vehicle.
The vehicle pictured is modelled after the vehicle I drove for Regimental HQ 'Command Troop' in the early 1980's when I was seconded to the Troop as a signals 'Specialist' for nearly 18 months. Command Troop was always manned by specialists for fixed periods on loan from the Tank Squadrons. Even though it was a very much 'back to basics' vehicle to crew with very few luxuries other than what we could 'bodge' for ourselves given the small amount of room available.
Command Troop had 3 Ferrets, 1 Mk2 commanded by the Regimental Signals Officer (of course) and 2 Mk 1/1's used almost exclusively as 'lone' outposts to extend the range of VHF radio signals for command and control purposes particularly in hilly terrain.
